While Valkyrie Entertainment usually works alongside other development teams, there are times when individuals are between teams and instead work on internal projects to keep our knowledge and skills fresh.
So far, I have worked on two internal projects, one in Unity, and one in Dreams.
Unity
When we joined on with Sony, it took a little while before all of us had been tasked out to Sony First Party studios, so we worked on a small project in the meantime. We decided to prototype a few things, but I spent my time working on a third-person sport-focused physics-based project with a small team. I was not on this project long, but I spent most of my time working to get the controls and movement feeling enjoyable.
Dreams
I worked with a couple artists to see how easily professionals could grok the Dreams controls and systems, and see how far we could take them when making a game. I originally attempted to make a 3D snake game, which caused me to discover quite a few limitations of the engine. After that learning process, one of the artists came up with a fun character design, which inspired my creativity. We fleshed out the mechanics, and focused on making a new character-driven 3D puzzle platformer, Dreams’ strong-suit. Once we had a completable and fun level built around the character mechanics, along with a splash screen at the start, we showed it off internally and tucked the concept away for later.
